Ultrasound Tech Job Outlook

The next decade should bring considerable growth in the field of diagnostic medical sonography, with the US Labor Bureau predicting a 19 percent increase in ultrasound tech employment.

Factors going into this increase include a growing population of elderly, as the baby boomer generation reaches retirement age. Another factor is the appeal of ultrasound as a non-radiologic technology, and thus a safer alternative to x-rays, as the risk of side effects due to repeated use is lower.

Ultrasound Tech Employment

The largest portion of employed ultrasound technicians will still be in hospitals (27,820 as of May 2007), with physicians’ offices (12,270) and medical and diagnostic laboratories (4,140) showing more rapid growth over the next decade.
